Trying to find some information about my G G Grandmother Martha PRICE in the 1871 census she was a servant at Wolverley Hall.
Between 1871 and 1877 she had two Illegitimate daughters who were born at Foxley Lodge, Wem.  Are these two places connected?
Are then any photographs available of Wolverley Hall.
She married Charles HINTON in 1877 who I believe was the gardener.

Any info gratefully received.

Hello Sue

In case you don't know, Foxley is a short distance north of Wem town centre in the vicinity of the large cemetery and also the Wem Workhouse and I just wonder if Foxley Lodge was a polite name for the workhouse.  I am well aware of other places in Shropshire where births in the workhouse were recorded on the birth certificate in such a way that the actual place of birth would not be an embarrassment to the child for the rest of his/her life.

Wolverley Hall was just under four miles from the Foxley area of Wem so only a bit over an hours walk.

Where did you find the information about these two illegitimate births because I can't find them at the moment?

Hi Mike,   I have her first born Sarahs Jane PRICE birth certificate No 235 stating she was born  on the 21st January, 1875 Foxley lodge, Wem. Mother Martha PRICE father not recorded. Residence given as Foxley Lodge.   Her younger sister Rhoda was born two years later again no name recorded for father. (I am not in receipt of this birth certificate.)  Thanks for this information about the workhouse makes the family history more interesting.

Hi All,

this is most interesting as since 2012, I am the owner of Foxley Lodge, Wem. (Now spelt Foxleigh Lodge.)

It was the gate lodge to Foxley House. Foxleigh House has now been swallowed up within a developement of bungalows, built in the 60's.

Just past the cemetery you mention, there is another cottage named Foxley Villa, interesting!

I trust this might reach you as your posts are a few years ago, and as I believe my use of this site is limited, my address is robertanthonycooper@gmail.com

Hello Robert

Have you seen your house on the old Ordnance Survey maps available on the National Library of Scotland web site?

6 inch to 1 mile scale

25 inches to 1 mile scale

I have emailed sue1134 to tell her about your message.

By the way I think there is an error with her reference to Rhoda PRICE.
